History and Development
Welsh
Boxes was founded in 1937 as a privately owned business.
The Company
was based at Greenhill, Swansea and it initially supplied
bags and wrapping papers to the retail trade. Later it manufactured
fancy boxes mainly for the millinery trade.
In 1939
Welsh Boxes relocated to larger premises in Landore, Swansea
where it broadened the scope of its activities. Sheet metal
work became an important aspect of the business and in the
early 1940s the Company manufactured such products as lockers,
wheelbarrows and ducting as well as contributing to the war
effort as a main supplier of ammunition boxes.
During
the 1950s the engineering side of the business was phased
out and the Company concentrated on packaging products. In
1962 the business relocated once again to a purpose built
factory in Fforestfach, Swansea where it is still based today.
At its
new site the Company concentrated on the manufacture of rigid
solid board boxes and on selling general packaging products.
When corrugated boxes came into the market Welsh Boxes started
to merchant these products.
During
the mid 1980s the Company commenced its investment programme
in corrugated conversion machinery. An initiative that has
continued to the present day and which provides a comprehensive
range of equipment that is able to manufacture a wide range
of printed, plain and die cut boxes.
In the
early 1990s the factory was expanded and additional warehouse
space was acquired.
Welsh
Boxes has built its reputation on service. It now operates
from a 46,000 square foot facility that includes 20,000 square
feet dedicated to customer storage.
In 1998
further investment saw the introduction of equipment to convert
heavy-duty Tri-wall board. In 1999 the Company was appointed
as a Tri-wall fabricator.
The Company
achieved registration to BS EN ISO 9002 in 1993 and was successful
in achieving BS EN ISO 9000 (2000) in February 2003.
